I think he knows his stuff and, importantly, admits when he doesn’t know something and is willing to find the answer.

Did this course meet or exceed your expectations? If not, in what way did it fall short? Was something not covered or covered too quickly? 96% - Meet or exceed my expectations (49) 4% - Didn’t meet my expectations (2) Comments Maybe additional examples of different types of calculations can be included in the manual with solutions to help make the manual a reference in calculating VOCs during inspections. Only possible improvement is a field trip to a couple of different types of surface coating operations. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I learned. More P2 information and spray guns-field information would have been useful. Maybe too much detail. Occasionally too basic for my experience. Our rule of 7.36 16/gal re: noncompliance calculation (Problem 11). Very in-depth. The rate of progress through the material interspersed with math problems was good. As a math-challenged person I could complete the problems at home when I couldn’t complete them in class. The logic in presenting the problems made sense to me and will be a very helpful reference. Would like to have capture efficiency addressed. I would appreciate discussion on capture efficiency. I wouldn’t have minded more time on the calculations. More important than calculations is knowing how things are really done – knowing that TE is, at best, a ballpark estimate means calculation is less important, but it is important to be able to see if booth/gun are operated per design. I would have liked information on capture efficiency & destruction efficiency testing. The transfer efficiency part was helpful. I thought I knew almost everything about this topic (smile). Some topics needed more time. Possibly show more videos of actual problems in plants. More discussion on regulations, capture efficiency, incineration of VOCs. Didn’t cover capture efficiency well. Also was interested in destruction efficiency. I though it would be boring, but it was very interesting. Very informative. It would be nice if there were more time to learn more surface coating chemistry. I have personal interest in household paints (I suspect that it is not pertinent to the class). Contained very good detail and overall general topics covered. Would suggest more on odor issue related to coatings/solvents and slower on calculations & formulas. I deal mostly with coating manufacturing, but the information is helpful. I do occasionally do permits for coating operations. Regulatory portion was not covered. Didn’t cover regulatory aspects that I assumed would be included.

Did you actually learn enough in this 3-day course to understand and solve surface coating equations or do you feel you would need additional training in this area? 78% - Yes (40) Comments I’ve learned more in this course than in any other VOC training class that I’ve attended. Understood okay. For purposes of remembering, I will need to go back because I can’t envision the ratio relationships in the formulas. Extra problem examples with solution keys would help with practice. Very good explanations of real life problems. I think having the math (practical problems of examples) will serve very helpful in regards to evaluating records. Secondarily, the information generally will make me more comfortable and knowledgeable/aware during inspections. I think with the binder to take home there is enough material learned in the 3-day course. The course was adequate to learn how to solve equations and problems. I liked the training and I think it will be sufficient to help me in my job. I would still need additional practice. Example problems & other training aides/references would be helpful for future use. The binder will be very helpful to solve equations in the future. Three days is enough, unless you go to specific areas of interest. I may need additional training to brush up on the concepts since I don’t work with these calculations every day. This was an excellent training. Many things were learned which will be used in the field. Calculations in this training are basic. A more in-depth and specific training, such as for auto assembly plant coating operations would be helpful. For the most part. I would need to review equations. The explanations of equations were very useful!! The problems and solved calculations were great! So often classes give tests and we don’t know if we did these correctly or not. I think I learned enough, but I don’t do coating often enough that I’ll remember everything the next time I do a coating permit. I have all of the information I need to complete equations with the course booklet as a reference. I would need more practice on solving the equations.
18% - No, need more training (9) Comments Additional training may be needed in the future for complex situations. I could solve them using the formulas by simply plugging in numbers, but I need more time to study them to understand exactly how to use them so I can do them on my own. Good basic understanding, but not a lot of explanations in terms of calculations. Explain calculations more. I would need additional time to think more about how the equations work. I felt rather rushed, like I was just plugging in numbers without any real understanding.
4% - No, not worth it (2) Comments
This is a "be honest" question. If currently or in the future you are inspecting a surface coating facility, would you reference your new manual for assistance? 94% - Yes (48) Comments Some of us need lots of basic math help. Would like more detail explanations of formulas – where they come from and what they actually represent. Will probably reference the calculations (formulas) for coatings and the spray gun information. Certainly in reviewing subordinates calculations or emission inventories. Very useful. I would use it to help me come up with my inspection "check list." A lot of the information in the manual I haven’t been able to find anywhere else, not even in the CARB manuals. I would probably review it before I went. It would be VERY nice if the manual had checklists that I could copy and take with me to the facility. Would be good to add tabs for easy reference to the various key topics. I will add these when I get a chance. Most definitely. I will probably copy some of the items into my inspection notebook. Great resource!!! The reference book will be my best resource – very valuable. Most definitely! Particularly with regard to evaluating recordkeeping. I think it will help me. Useful reference especially for the calculations. I will use this manual as a reference when I’m writing a permit for a surface coating facility since I’m not an inspector. Especially for the calculations. I don’t inspect facilities, but the manual will be helpful for permit reviews.
4% - Maybe (2) 2% - No (1)
Do you have any complaints/comments concerning anything that has happened at this training over the past three days? I think the most valuable information Ron shared was actual facilities’ problems and the solutions to problems they faced. We solve most problems by using solutions that were made for similar problems faced in the past by our agency, other state agencies, or EPA. Not enough time for math problems. Begin with spray guns & maybe transfer efficiency, then calculations. I like how you develop simple tests using simple devices (ex., stopwatch & jar). Put all of the pertinent formulas on one sheet in the manual for easy reference during the class and later on the job. A worthwhile training. One of the best speakers/trainings that I have attended with AQD. In general, the facility and food was good. Great job! Excellent course!!!!! Very well run. It would be good to have these trainings in non-winter months. I think it went well. A CD-ROM would be a good idea to train new employees. Power Point presentations are a great idea! AQD could also use to train new employees. It would be good if this presentation were to be offered to the small business. A program should be done here in Michigan for industry. Would be a good course for regulated community. I think training for industry would be helpful for them, if they’d be interested, especially the information on transfer efficiency and how to properly use the various types of guns. It would be helpful to present a class for end users. It would be of value to offer appropriate training to companies in Southwest Michigan. This training should be offered to the regulated community.
