PARTICULATE EMISSIONS FROM SPRAY BOOTHS

Q. Is there a device to measure how much overspray (in a paint booth) is leaving through the exhaust system?

A. The the best of my knowledge there is not special equipment that can measure the amount of overspray being emitted from a paint booth on an ongoing basis. However, I believe that it is possible to perform stack emission tests and to collect overspray that passes through the exhaust stack. Based on the results, and knowing how much paint was applied, one can calculate the particulate capture efficiency of the filters. One method that does not use actual paint, but substitutes dry powders in lieu of paints is EPA Method 319. This method does not look at the emissions from the stack, but measures the capture efficiency of the filters themselves. All filter manufacturers can tell you more about the test.
