GRAVITY FED HVLP vs. PRESSURE CUP FOR AUTOMOTIVE PAINTING

Q.  Do you have a preference or recommendation as to buying a gravity feed HVLP vs. the more standard pressurized cup HVLP?

A.  I don't have a preference for gravity versus pressure feed HVLP, but by watching tens of painters over the years it seems that those who use a gravity feed gun are very happy with their results. Whether they know it or not, gravity feed guns don't allow you to increase your fluid pressure endlessly, whereas pressure feed cup guns allow you to paint with pressures of perhaps 3-10 psig. This is not a definitive range, but something I think is reasonable. By limiting the fluid pressure, as is the case with gravity-fed HVLP guns, you will automatically be forced to keep your air pressure down, and hence you will get a great looking finish.

Perhaps the gravity-fed gun is the preferred choice for a person who does not need to be rushed on account of high production demands.
