AUTOBODY SHOP IN RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD? Q. How do I get a backyard body shop out of my residential neighborhood?
A. There are a number of things you might do. First, contact your local air pollution control agency and inquire if there are specific regulations that a body shop needs to comply with. In many states, a body shop needs to perform all painting inside a spray booth and the owner must comply with at least a minimum number of requirements.
Call the local fire department to insure that the folks there are aware that the shop is operating in a residential neighborhood. If the shop doesn't meet all the fire and OSHA codes, a fire in the shop could affect the houses in its neighborhood.
Ask local city administrators if the residential area is zoned for businesses such as body shops.
