VOC AND HAP INFORMATION FOR WATERBORNE COATINGS Q: If an MSDS gives only one number for the VOC or HAP content of a coating, is this given in terms of lbs/gal or lbs/gal, less water and exempt compounds? I have several MSDS that do not state the units after the value. How am I to know what the value means? A: In all probability the chemist who has calculated the VOC or HAP content intends you to know whether or not the coating is compliant. Therefore, in most cases it will be given as lbs VOC/gal, less water and exempt compounds. Since the onus is upon you to verify compliance, you cannot take any chances. If the MSDS doesn't give the units you are well advised to call the vendor and verify the data. Suppose you find that the value given on the MSDS is, in fact, "less water, less exempt compounds", will that solve your problem? Actually, no. It will only clarify whether or not the coating is in compliance with a VOC or HAP regulation. You will still need to know the actual VOC or HAP content given in lbs/gal.
