ADhesives for Powder Coating Q. What kind of adhesive sticks to powder coatings? We are using rubber gaskets that need to be glued to a powder coated surface. The 3M products do not work. We make lighting fixtures for the Defense Department. A. I referred your question to a colleague of mine, Mike Cravens of Powder Finishing Consultants, Inc. (714-264-3656). His response is as follows: The question/statement about 3M adhesives products not working on powder coating is likely based on one or two adhesive products. For example, we would not expect the Post-It note adhesive to permanently bond labels on any surface. As you may be aware 3M makes a lot of adhesives. The correct answer to the question about what adhesive to use cannot be supplied until the "powder coating" resin chemistry is known. All powder formulations are not alike, some powder chemistries (i.e. epoxy) have very good chemical resistant properties and may require a very aggressive adhesive that may even require a primer or a catalyzed two component system.
