Powder Coating FOR NOVICES

Q. I am a novice at powder coating. I have a small operation restoring classic cars. I have had several customers ask if I can powder coat a few engine accessories. I have sent pieces out to be powder coated with mixed results. Just like painting, I am sure the prep work is the key. I have a sand blasting booth. I assume I can use a similar booth for coating as long as I set up a filtration system? As for the oven, all I have come across are walk-in ovens. These are simply too large for my operation. Since the parts are small, could a conventional cooking oven be utilized. Am I being realistic? I am looking to spend $3,000 to $4,000.

A. Before you go ahead and start powder coating on your own, I suggest that you purchase a book called "Powder Coating - the Complete Finisher's Handbook" which is published by the Powder Coating Institute, at www.powdercoating.org. The book is very easy to read and contains lots of very useful information. Please be sure that you also read the chapter on health and safety!

In the meantime, I do not suggest that you use your cooking oven for baking powders as this can easily lead to a fire. You must have proper ventilation, industrial hygiene, and safety procedures in place before you go ahead with the powder coating operation.
