Q:  What are typical particle sizes of paints and coatings?  I have a client who sprays resins/gel on product in a well ventilated area, however, the system does not contain particulate filters.  I would like to recommend they install particulate filters, however, since, I am not sure of the correct particle size, I can not advise them on specific filter media.

A:  You don't need to know the particulate sizes.  The spray booth filters that are sold by companies such as those listed below have been designed to perform the filtration you require.  The company that you are advising will, however need to decide how many stages to purchase; one, two or three.  Each stage captures ever smaller particles.  If the paints used by the company do not contain inorganic HAP particulates, such as chromates, a two stage filtration system should be adequate.  On the other hand, if the company uses lots of paint that contains inorganic HAPs, your state agency might want them to install a three-stage system.  This is really up to you.
