Q: We are a manufacturer of epoxy and polyurathane coatings for a variety of applications. Does the EPA issue any approvals for coatings for particular applications? I was asked this question in regards to the internal coatings of air ducts in commercial buildings. If not an approval, does the EPA have a compliance standard for this and other types of applications. A: The EPA does not approve coatings for specific purposes. The EPA is predominantly interested in pollution; whether air, water, or waste, but not in the performance ability of specific coatings. I am not aware of any organization that approves coatings for specific applications, such as the internal ducts of air conditioning systems. I am aware that the EPA and state agencies have regulations for indoor air quality, but I do not know these regulations. Presumably the coatings must perform in such as manner as not to adversely affect the indoor air quality of living spaces. For more information on indoor air quality, you might want to speak to someone who specializes in this field.
