Q: What do people mean when they say that they are using an environmental coating? A: There is no such thing as an “environmental coating.” However, what the term refers to is that the paint or coating is in environmental compliance with a federal or state air pollution regulation. For instance, in California, a coating that has a VOC content of 2.8 lbs/gal might be said to be an environmental compliance coating, because it meets California’s standards for miscellaneous metal parts. As an environmental coating consultant, I focus much of my career assisting clients in finding or selecting environmentally compliant coatings for their specific applications.
