Q: What can be done to prevent color shift of coatings when stored for months or years? A: you can not control the change of color. Having been in the business for many years, I found that wet paint samples are totally unreliable. When a batch of paint is manufactured several important steps are taken. When the batch passes quality control specifications physical properties are checked against a standard. The paint is sprayed on to test panels where the required information is noted and recorded, size of batch dates manufactured product code, etc. When a reference is made to the particular batch of paint, questions about color or gloss always revert back to the sprayed out panel and rarely to the wet sample retained from the batch. The color shift that you experience is a common problem with paints and coatings which are considered to be perishables and are apt to sour in a short period of time. I suggest you prepare your customers for extra charges if they expect their auto parts to match the original color by color matching the liquid paint because it is the only way to maintain the exact color.
