Q: What are the most common paint defects or failures? Can they be remedied by painter training? A: The most common coating defects and failures are: Painter training can eliminate or dramatically reduce orange peel and tiger striping. These two coating failures or coating defects are strictly in the hands of the painter. Blistering is often a property of the paint formulation. Pinholing can be reduced by painter training, but for the most part is a function of the solvents that are used in the paint formulation. Cratering is almost always a function of surface preparation, or the deposition of aerosol siliconized particles from certain aerosol sprays on the metal surface. Peeling, lifting or flaking are also usually a function of surface preparation. In some cases, peeling results when too many coats of paint are applied too soon after each other preventing solvents from escaping from the paint or coating.
