Back to Troubleshooting Paints & Painting

Q.  The concrete floor of our school gymnasium was coated with an epoxy.  The paint is now peeling.  How can we determine the cause?

A.  There are several factors that must be addressed when inspecting a coating failure on any surface.  You must first gather as much information about the process as is available such as.

Is it new construction or a repaint over an existing painted surface?  If it is new construction?  How long after pouring or forming of the concrete was the coating applied?  What prep work was performed?  How was the coating applied sprayed, brushed or by roller?  What type of coating was applied?  What is the Dry Film Thickness (DFT) and does it meet the manufacturer’s specification?

These are only a few of several more questions that should be addressed when trying to determine the cause of a paint failure.

We do perform field service inspections, and can further assist you in determining the cause of the paint failure by performing an on site inspection.  If you are interested in pursuing this project and would like our assistance, please feel free to contact us.
